SoftCam

SoftCam is a virtual capture driver that parks itself in front of your real capture driver.

It provides a switch (in a pretty user interface) that allows you to switch between the real capture driver and itself at anytime during a NetMeeting session. When switched to the real capture driver all is normal in NetMeeting (Luminisoti claims it will work with many video phone or capture programs), when you switch it to the SoftCam you can inject still pictures, animated gifs and pre recorded avi's into the outgoing video stream.

It also claims with a separate add-on (though this isn't in the demo version) to be able to mix prerecorded audio with your mic input in real time and deliver that to the meeting. Another add-on provides a kind of "Post-it" note function.

Of all products here, I find this one the most fascinating and potentially useful. It is available as a trial 30 day download.

SoftCam is available for sale again after a long hiatus ( and a Win2000/XP is planned for the fall)

HyperCam

HyperCam is a screen capture utility that while not designed for NetMeeting may well prove an answer for people that want to capture incoming video to an AVI file for later playback. It is available for download at as an unlimited trial (the trial disfigures the video by pasting a label on it but otherwise is fully functional).

It can be purchased for $30 from Hyperionics. I tried it capturing my preview video and I found it was able to capture small video at 7-8 frames a second. I am not sure how much horsepower would be required to capture incoming video, send video and deal with incoming and outgoing video but my guess is the 133 Pentiums would be stretched to the limit -- still if you have a fast machine (and they get faster every day) this may be just the product.

SnagIt

Snagit can create avi screen captures similar to HyperCam but seems to have all sorts of other features including single image screen captures, capturing scrolling windows, making thumbnails. It is available as a demo download.

It can be purchased for $39.95 from TechSmith. haven't actually tried it but I would guess that the same speed issues exist for Snagit as for HyperCam.

TZO

TZO offers a dynamic naming service that provides you with a unique name that works through the standard internet DNS system but tracks your current IP (especially important if you are using a ISP with dynamic IP addressing, which most are).

It allows you to assign and retain a permanent name for your computer that your potential correspondents can use to call you in NetMeeting. It also allows you to track the status of other TZO users (and they to track you), to determine online or available status. It costs $19.95 a year and can be tried free for 30 days.

It may be a solution for some for the current ILS problems.

Video Conference Recorder

Video Conference Recorder may be downloaded and purchased at Virtual Desk. It is screen are capture program like HyperCam and Snag It! and sells for $49.95.

I haven't had a chance to try it but it seems to have less features for more money than the other products mentioned on this page.
