I have noticed that Microsoft and probably a few other software providers are quite likely to make available new versions of software (at least new builds) that are just leaked out with little fanfare sometimes without any obvious version number changes. This has been especially true with NetMeeting and continues for Msn/Windows Messenger. I am not sure what the cause is -- maybe the development guys are trying to do an end run around policy and announcements -- maybe it is an administrative foul up but it seems that when it happens it creates a large amount of confusion even with experienced users.

This "Version Watch" page provides as up-to-date information as I can about current versions and provide a recent history to help people figure out what is going on. With any luck this may become superfluous in the future.

To help people spot latest changes the graphic will appear near new information on the page. The columns in the light turquoise color represent the recommended versions. I have also added the clickable banner above with last update time and date that will go to the current new location.

Since this page was getting crowded with old and sometimes not very useful information, I have moved that information to this archive page and just keep more recently available versions on the main page.

Comments A host of changes:
1) supposedly UPnP based file transfer but I have not tried to confirm
2) numerous cosmetic changes
3) this version works on XP and other operating systems -- though it isn't clear to me if it is a stand alone at this point

For some reason this is not linked to at the messenger website at the time of this writing -- makes me suspicious that there is a problem or possible problem with this version.

Comments This  version reintroduces features in that are in Msn Messenger but were for some reason excluded from Windows Messenger including mobile paging, direct access to profiles and chat rooms.

It also seems to have advertising that it didn't have before -- ugh!

Comments Incorporates NetMeeting like features in Msn Messenger like instant messaging program. I have published a review. This version introduces a number of features including a strategy for grouping contacts, and the ability to cross communicate with using voice with Msn Messenger 4.5. The Messenger website has a summary of features and download link.

It also adds back features like exporting/ importing contacts, making computer to telephone calls that were in Msn Messenger but didn't make it into the initial XP release.

 I don't know why there was a new version a day after the last version.

Where to get it No longer available. Microsoft also has posted the latest 3.01 resource kit at the NetMeeting site. Available from the Microsoft NetMeeting website. Netscape users were still getting the old version so I have included a direct download link. Available only as part of Windows Me. This version now available for download at NetMeeting website -- called service pack 2 This version is only available in the XP release.
Comments This is the released version of 3.01 -- this is the one we may have to live with for a while -- changes from the last beta are as far as I can tell under the covers. Please note that this is different from the version released with Win98 SE -- that is an old and bug ridden version and SE users should upgrade to the latest version as soon as possible. This is a service release of NetMeeting 3.01 -- no feature changes that I have been able to determine but lots of bug fixes. Microsoft has published a list of changes.

It seems at the same time Microsoft has shut down ils1-5.microsoft.com and with it the "Microsoft Internet Directory" http search interface.

 No obvious changes but I am still looking Not installable on Win 2000
